About Geylang
Geylang grew in the 1800s around coconut and lemongrass plantations. Geylang Serai, named after the lemongrass (serai), became a centre of Malay culture.
The numbered lorongs off Geylang Road and Sims Avenue were laid out as the area grew, and many old shophouses still line them today.
Since the 1990s many small freehold condos have been built along the lorongs, and Paya Lebar has grown into a business hub around Paya Lebar Quarter.
