Parquet in Bukit Merah homes
Bukit Merah has pre-war and 1960s to 1970s flats, 1990s condos such as The Anchorage and Emerald Park, and newer waterfront and Alexandra condos. Bukit Merah has some of the oldest timber floors we see, in older flats and 1980s and 1990s condos like Teresa Ville and The Anchorage. Newer Keppel Bay and Alexandra condos mostly have engineered timber.
Local tip: In older units near the sea, check for gaps opening between pieces in dry months. A refill and recoat usually fixes it.

About Bukit Merah
Bukit Merah means 'red hill' in Malay. Legend says the hill turned red with the blood of a boy who saved Singapura from attacking swordfish.
Tiong Bahru's art deco flats were built by the Singapore Improvement Trust from the 1930s and are among the oldest public housing in Singapore. Redhill and Bukit Merah followed with HDB estates in the 1960s and 1970s.
The waterfront has since changed completely: Caribbean at Keppel Bay, Reflections at Keppel Bay and The Interlace were built in the 2000s and 2010s, and Greater Southern Waterfront plans will bring more homes.
Landmarks
